Readers in the Washington, D.C., area may know that the Marine Corps Marathon will take place on Saturday. What may come as a surprise to even them, however, is that Clarence Thomas is among its “ famous finishers.” He ran the race in 1980 – 11 years before he joined the Supreme Court – and clocked an impressive time of 3:11:00, according to the event website. The Supreme Court on Wednesday left in place an order by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., that prohibits the Federal Bureau of Prisons from enforcing a new policy on healthcare for transgender inmates that would prevent such inmates from obtaining (among other things) hormone therapy and “social accommodations” (such as makeup, wigs, and padding). In a brief, unsigned order, the court turned down the BOP’s request to pause that decision.

The Trump administration returned to the Supreme Court on Wednesday afternoon, asking the justices to allow it to resume construction of its border wall in the Big Bend region of southwestern Texas. U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer called the order by a federal trial judge in El Paso temporarily halting the construction “baseless” and “unprecedented.”

During the early months of President Donald Trump’s second term, the federal government detained and sought to deport several students and academics because of their support for Palestine. The Supreme Court could soon take up the cases of two of those detainees, Mahmoud Khalil and Badar Khan Suri, both of whom have since been released. The issue at the center of these cases is whether federal trial courts have the power to consider challenges to the two men’s detentions, or whether (as the Trump administration argues) those challenges are instead barred by federal immigration law.
