Overnight thunderstorms continue to clear out as Thursday afternoon continues. Still, lingering showers and cloud cover will keep temperatures in the mid to upper 80s for most of the area. Heading into the weekend, drier air will begin filtering in from the west, allowing afternoon highs to climb back into the mid-90s. Drier and hotter conditions are expected to take hold next week as high pressure builds over the area. High temperatures will consistently reach the mid-90s with heat indices in the mid to upper 100s. This will likely trigger Heat Advisories for much of the region by Monday. Tracking the Tropics: Tropical Storm Dolly has been named out in the central Atlantic Ocean. The storm will continue to move west over the next several days. While it will likely be downgraded from tropical storm status by the time it makes landfall in the Caribbean this weekend, it could still bring heavy rain and flooding to parts of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Virgin Islands.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect across Central Mississippi this afternoon due to heat indices between 105 and 110. Actual high temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s under partly cloudy skies. There will be an opportunity for relief in the form of scattered showers as the afternoon goes on. Amid the hot and humid afternoon air, increasing tropical moisture will bring an increase in scattered showers and thunderstorms today. This pattern will last into the start of the weekend with rain chances hovering around 40 to 50%. There is a risk for flash flooding within a few of these downpours Friday afternoon. Rain chances will drop slightly heading into Labor Day, but isolated storms will remain a daily occurrence next week. Temperatures will remain in the mid 90s with heat indices near the mid 100s.

A similar weather pattern is expected heading into the holiday weekend before a strong high-pressure system moves in at the start of the new week. Rain chances will drop to around 20%, leaving central Mississippi drier and even hotter by Labor Day

Thunderstorms will return Sunday as a cold front approaches. Ahead of the front, temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, triggering a Heat Advisory for the entire area. Scattered afternoon and evening storms are expected to develop between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., bringing a marginal risk of severe weather. Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat.

A weak cool front has passed to our south, brining temperatures down into the mid 90s today instead of the upper 90s. That being said, heat indices remain in the mid to upper 100s. A heat advisory remains in effect, primarily along and west of Interstate 55. While afternoon showers are possible, most of the area will stay dry today. This mostly dry weather pattern will continue through the middle of the week, keeping temperatures above normal. A disturbance will arrive Thursday through Saturday bringing more widespread afternoon rain and storms, but the temperature chance will be underwhelming. High will drop into the low-90s this weekend. Looking into next week, the high-pressure system is expected to strengthen even further, likely bringing another wave of intense and stressful heat to the region.

A strong high-pressure system will keep central Mississippi mostly dry today. There is very little chance of rain today, but that changes as we head through the rest of the week. From Thursday through Saturday, rain chances increase to around 50% as a disturbance moves into the area. This extra cloud cover and rain should prevent temperatures from surpassing the seasonal average. Conditions will dry back out next week, causing high temperatures to climb back into the mid 90s.
