The Maple Leafs were plagued with many problems last season, but when it came to their results, their biggest issue was their inability to win within their division. They posted a winning record against two of the other three divisions and were .500 against the third. While it is early — and the Leafs’ overall […]

In the past two seasons, the Maple Leafs barely possessed the puck. Last season, they finished last in 5v5 shot-attempt share. The year they won their division, they finished 29th but were buoyed by excellent goaltending. Over the same period, we can draw a pretty clear parallel between possessing the puck and winning the Cup. […]

It’s no stretch to suggest the Vegas-Colorado-Utah road trip is the hardest in the NHL. Getting some positive results and chugging along is critical to the Maple Leafs building momentum after a 2-2-0 homestand to start the season. Well, there’s still a game to go, but the Leafs have already banked three points–a solid trip […]

Six games into the new season, the Maple Leafs are 3-2-1. It’s easy to forget, but they had the exact same record after six games last season, too. On their current road trip last season, it started much the same way — blowing a lead against Vegas but picking up a point, beating Colorado, then […]

Six games into the season, the Maple Leafs are a more talented, more exciting team, with plenty still to figure out. In our assessment of the Leafs after six games, we looked at encouraging signs within the team’s forward depth, the challenge of building a consistent three-line attack, and the disjointed breakouts. The talent is […]

The Maple Leafs completed a trade on Tuesday evening, sending Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Aatu Räty. Just a day earlier, Räty cleared waivers. Trading for him accomplishes two things, and the first isn’t the contract spot exchange. By acquiring a player who has already passed through waivers, […]

Nine games into the season, with six of them played at home, a 3–4–2 record with only two regulation wins is not exactly the start the Maple Leafs envisioned. That makes the Leafs the only team below .500 in the Atlantic Division. That’s what happens when you play three home games against divisional rivals and […]

Well, the Maple Leafs are now 21-5-2 against the Edmonton Oilers in the Auston Matthews era, and 12-2-1 in Edmonton specifically. This might have been their best win yet: A resounding 7-2 victory in which the Leafs came out flying, eventually took the lead in the final six minutes of the first period, and never […]

Dramatic wins, blowout wins, and a first career game-winner for Gavin McKenna. This was a memorable 4-0-0 week for the Maple Leafs, with plenty to talk about. Now 13 games into the new season with a 7-4-2 record, it’s at least slightly sobering to consider that the Leafs were 7-5-1 through 13 games last season. […]

This road trip started with a promising win against the Edmonton Oilers. Now, the Maple Leafs will need a win in Vancouver, usually a house of horrors for Toronto, just to finish .500. After the Calgary game, Jim Hiller was about as curt as he’s been in his short time as head coach, clearly frustrated […]
