Author Mary Craig wrings her hands in distress as she narrates, in first-person, the excruciating experiences a victim of the witch-hunting craze in the 16th century likely endured. This is a presentation that brings a new dimension of realism to her book Borders Witch Hunt: 17th Century Witchcraft Trials in the Scottish Borders. As she talks to the audience while embodying this character, we get an acute sense of the fact these horrors actually did happen – and not in a far-away, detached land of fantasy – but just down the street, where witches were hanged in front of Edinburgh castle.

Angela Jackson, a jazz performer and writer, leads a variety show based around the various figures who have inspired her throughout her life, focused on the trials and joys of romantic love. Jackson sings her way through her own teenage dating experiences and lessons she learned later in life. She merges together wisdom from philosophers, psychologists, artists, and of course, the 1989 rom-com When Harry Met Sally.

We often use comedy as a coping mechanism to cover up darker aspects of reality that we would rather not confront. In his Fringe debut, Mario Adrion does this strikingly – not necessarily as a way to avoid dark topics, but as a means of relaying important messages to us.

Within the first thirty seconds of Baby Brain , I was convinced that this abstract play was going to be too confusing to follow; to my surprise, that was the crew's exact intention. Centred around postpartum psychosis, BAFTA award winner Kimberley Nixon masterfully combines laughter with a profoundly thought-provoking performance.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. An enjoyable and light-hearted way to begin my day of ‘fringing,' but still ultimately left me wanting more.

I unfortunately arrived to Tarang Hardikar: If I'm Not Wrong slightly after the show began and was greeted by Hardikar asking why I was late. He instantly made a joke about it, that apparently followed from a previous joke, and riotous laughter ensued. This was how the rest of the hour swiftly went by; with witty jokes following each other in quick succession, and everyone in the room smiling so hard and for so long that our cheeks hurt.

This beautiful blend is what the show is. Dodd's personality exudes through the performance, and into every one of us in the audience that engages with it. He transforms the people sitting in the rowed seats facing the stage into a loving group of close friends over the hour, through a range of partly improvised group dances, compassionate speeches and guided meditations, amongst other things.
