Flying squads tested 8,217 taxi and auto drivers across Maharashtra on Thursday. In the Mumbai region, 604 of 3,995 were served notices. Each has a month to learn, or lose the badge for three.

Starting Thursday, August 20, officials from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) began their rounds, testing auto and taxi drivers on their working knowledge of Marathi through everyday conversation they are likely to have with the passengers.
