The interactive exhibit Echoes of Resistance, created to highlight the many ways that the movement in Philadelphia has mobilized for Palestine over recent decades, finally opened on June 19 at Studio 34 in West Philadelphia to a diverse and welcoming audience. The exhibit, organized by the Philadelphia Palestine Coalition (PPC), featured the work of photographers Mike Arrison and Joe Piette, and videographer Sunny Singh, and was coordinated by Noor Qutyan.

Philadelphia — Workers at PECO, the electric company in Philadelphia, who went on strike just before midnight on July 4 won a tentative agreement for 1,600 workers only minutes before midnight on July 6.

Following months of intense public pressure, Citizens Bank announced on July 17 that it would end its financing of immigration detention centers operated by CoreCivic and GEO Group. While the bank claims its decision was due to the federal government’s plans to purchase many of those com panies’ facilities, it is more likely that the withdrawal of millions of dollars by protesting groups over the past few months was the key factor.

As of July 28, the U.S. was at war with Iran for 150 days, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians and dozens of Iranian leaders, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, including bombing a school in Minab, Iran, and the undermining of global trade. Calling for this war to end, locally coordinated protests took place in over 30 cities in the U.S., Britain and Canada.

Lawyers for Pennsylvania political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal filed a 20-page petition with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on his behalf on July 28 outlining nearly 45 years of “failures of the criminal legal system” in his case.

On Sept. 1 the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning socialism and calling for the passage of #47’s voter suppression “SAVE America Act.” They passed the nonbinding resolution with a 220 to 192 vote — with eight Democratic Party Congress members supporting the resolution and two abstaining.
