The #2-ranked Pitt women’s volleyball defeated #17-ranked Tennessee 3-0 last night, by set scores of 25-17, 28-26 and 25-20 in the Shriners Children’s Hospital Showdown at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida. Senior Olivia Babcock led Pitt (7-0) with 17 kills.

The NFL season opened last night with the Seattle Seahawks defeating the New England Patriots 13-10. The Seahawks scored the game’s final 13 points in the second half, after the Patriots had built a 10-0 lead into the third quarter. Seattle picked off New England quarterback Drake Maye three times in the game, but the Seahawks also lost their starting quarterback Sam Darnold to a hip injury during the game. Drew Lock replaced him and threw for 187 yards and a score.

Girls Soccer: –Butler defeated North Hills 1-0. Lucia Leyland scored the only goal of the game as the Golden Tornado opened section play with a win. They are now 2-1-1 (1-0). –Seneca Valley also opened section play with a 2-0 victory over Pine-Richland. Izzy Yuhouse and Cece Wildrick scored for the Raiders, who improved to 3-0-2 overall.

Boys Golf: –Mars won a tight section match over Butler 197-191 at Slippery Rock Golf Club. Jackson Geiger was medalist for Mars with a 34. Finn McKenzie and Landon Mitro added 39’s for the Planet golfers. Eli Snyder led the Golden Tornado with a 37. Levi McClellan added 38. Drew Cuny had a 40.

The #13-ranked Slippery Rock University football will travel to East Stroudsburg for a PSAC-crossover game Saturday night. Kick-off is 6:35pm. Pre-game begins at 6pm with the Coach Shawn Lutz Show on The Rock Station 97.7 and the Rock Football Audio Network. The Rock enters the game 1-0 after their thrilling double overtime win over then #12-ranked Minnesota Duluth, who are now ranked 15th in the nation at the Division II level. East Stroudsburg is 2-0 after wins over Seton Hill and Pace.

The Nascar Cup Series will head to the St. Louis market this Sunday for a race at the old Gateway Speedway – now known as World Wide Technology Raceway. Race coverage of the second of 10 playoff races begins at 2pm on WBUT. It is just the fifth time the Cup Series has raced at the track. Denny Hamlin won last year’s September race.

The Pittsburgh Steelers open their season Sunday when they host the Atlanta Falcons at Acrisure Stadium. Kick-off is 1pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at noon.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 last night to complete a three-game series sweep. Jared Jones took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before allowing a two-out double. He ended the night allowing just the one hit while walking two and striking out eight.
