The project would place what the Pentagon described as the Navy's first shore-based advanced nuclear microreactor in southern Indiana as the federal government seeks to strengthen the energy resilience of bases that currently rely on the commercial electric grid. Unlike traditional nuclear power plants that generate electricity for large regional grids, microreactors are designed to provide smaller amounts of power to facilities such as military installations.

Residents and families at Cedar Creek learned in recent days that the Bloomington memory care facility will close by Oct. 31, and new owners will turn it into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. The news has left dozens of families scrambling to find new homes for their loved ones with dementia, including some who were displaced only weeks ago because of the closure of Jill's House, a former memory care facility on the city's north side.

The City of Bloomington Utilities said the discoloration is caused by manganese, "a naturally occurring mineral that can produce a temporary brown or yellow tint to the water.”

The new Cedar Creek owners, based in New York, are converting the facility on East Moores Pike, and a related facility near Tapp Road, to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.

The union president said the announcement was welcomed by the plant's roughly 500 hourly workers — but he said many had hoped for additional jobs.
