The only two hurricanes to make direct landfall in Hawaii in modern history both made sharp turns before crossing over Kauai — a similar turn forecasters and emergency officials are watching closely as Hurricane Lowell moves south of the islands.

Gov. Josh Green issued a statewide emergency proclamation Thursday as Hurricane Lowell threatened to make a sharp turn toward Kauai this weekend, but he emphasized that the forecast is still uncertain for the powerful storm’s exact path.

Even as Lowell weakened Saturday, it is expected to be a major hurricane as it churns north toward the western main Hawaiian islands, prompting cancellation of today’s Kauai Marathon & Half Marathon and causing residents, businesses, nonprofits and county agencies to prepare for the worst.

While residents on Kauai prepare for Hurricane Lowell’s impact, a team of three is flying straight into the storm.
