By the time the morning sun begins beating down on Kingston’s asphalt, Doreen Lillian Scarlett is already sweating. Still, the 35-year-old keeps walking. With a bundle of résumés tucked under her arm, she has been moving from office to office across the Corporate Area, pausing only when someone is willing to take one. The journey, which started in July, has taken her through Half-Way Tree, New Kingston, Hope Road, Trafalgar Road and downtown, covering streets in the hope that, somewhere along the way, an employer will give her the chance she desperately needs.

Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has doubled down on his criticism of Jamaica’s public procurement system, insisting that the prolonged delay in getting a proposed 100-bed psychiatric facility at Bellevue Hospital approved reflects a failure of government agencies to work together. Tufton was responding to the Public Procurement Commission (PPC), which last week rejected his suggestion that it had contributed to delays in the project, saying it had never received a procurement submission for the facility and therefore could not have delayed its consideration.

Antriesha Williams had no problem telling the two children “no”. One wanted ‘vampire teeth’. The other wanted a ‘Surprise Bag’ — an assortment of toys and candy. However, with the school day about to begin, Williams turned them away from her stall outside Greater Portmore Primary School in St Catherine last Friday. “I don’t sell my kids candy in the morning,” she said.
