With tight margins continuing to squeeze farm budgets, soybean producers are scrutinizing every dollar they spend. That includes their investments in the soybean checkoff, which has spent the past 35 years developing markets and creating additional demand for American soybeans.

Dry conditions in some parts of the country during the growing season have taken a toll on alfalfa production, leaving affected farmers wondering whether their stands will survive the winter or if it's time to rotate those fields into another crop. However, reduced yields don't necessarily mean an alfalfa stand has suffered permanent damage.

The uses for American soybeans have expanded well beyond traditional food and livestock feed markets. From renewable fuels and building materials to everyday products, soybeans are finding their way into an increasing number of applications. Developing those markets, however, takes more than research alone. It also requires cooperation between organizations working to strengthen demand both domestically and internationally.

Lower commodity prices, speculative selling, and seasonal harvest pressure are creating challenges for producers as they decide whether to sell their grain or put it into storage.

Farmers can make all the right decisions when it comes to fertilizer and crop management, but Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. Whether it's too much rain or not enough, moisture conditions can determine how effectively crops use the nutrients already in the soil. New technology is looking to help farmers better manage both moisture and nutrient availability.

With cattle imports from Mexico underway again, new identification and documentation procedures are improving the ability of animal health officials to track livestock entering the United States. Electronic identification is playing a larger role in that process, providing more detailed records of individual animals as they move through U.S. ports of entry.
