On October 27, 1969, workers at General Electric, organized mostly in the International Union of Electrical Workers, with smaller numbers in the United Electrical Workers, went on strike. Over the next 102 days, upwards of 164,000 workers per day broke GE's long history of aggressive bargaining and anti-unionism to win major concessions. This became one of the era's most important strikes.

High Country News had a powerful story in their July issue about the creation of “man camps” in rural Alaska, all-male spaces in extremely remote mining campus, and the enormous epidemic of sexual assault that results enacted upon Native communities. The communities themselves are organizing against both individual incidents and organized trafficking.

It's so hard to compete for a top seed and then a title in the NBA. Never mind load management and relatively short-term injuries. Those losses can be worked around. But losing your second best player quite possibly for the season plus a starting guard is pretty rough. That's what happened to Oklahoma City this weekend. Jalen Williams' inability to stay healthy as the #2 guy on the Thunder helped doom OKC last year in the Western Conference Finals. Now he broke his fibula and dislocated his ankle in a gruesome injury. I don't know if someone can make it back from a compound injury like that. It's a very long season, so in six months, who knows, but even if Williams can make it back for the playoffs, the Thunder's ability to get a top seed is going to be heavily challenged. Moreover, Cason Wallace tore his labrum in the same game. Wallace may not be Williams, but he's a key member of that team. This seriously challenges OKC's depth and means that rookie Bennett Stirtz and, at least as of now, undrafted free agent rookie Josh Dix instantly have to produce in rotation minutes. We will see.

Dolores Huerta, the great leader of the United Farm Workers, has died. She was not perfect. I had an obituary written for her, but then I wrote a chapter on her in Organizing America I will reprint that here, though this not the final version so there are the slight editorial warnings that come with such a thing. This was written before it came out that Cesar Chavez raped and impregnated her. So all now must be contextualized with that information.

This is the grave of Paul Hornung. Born in 1935 in Louisville, Kentucky, Hornung grew up in that city and was a great athlete.

In 1988, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, the son of Lazaro Cárdenas, who has been president of Mexico between 1934 and 1940 and was the farthest left president in Mexican history, decided to run for president himself. By this point, the PRI, the ruling party of Mexico that his father had helped found, was a decrepit, sclerotic mess of corruption and murdering opponents of the regime. For the first time since the Revolution, the PRI was actually threatened by an opposition candidate. He had hoped to be the PRI choice that year, but Miguel de la Madrid tapped Carlos Salinas instead. So Cárdenas ran as the party of the PRD, the left-leaning alternative.

While I haven't read the book, the title of Gil Durán's new book, The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy is truly A+ work.
