Everyone in the amorphous drone rock collective Water Damage understood their marching orders late last April: They would play their early afternoon set at Austin Psych Fest in 4/4 time. They’d practiced it and even clued in the day’s special guest, Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey, to one of the few concrete plans for their 35-minute performance. So just before 2 p.m. on that Saturday, Greg Piwonka counted out the beat and began pounding.
