This study investigates the influence of welding current on the high-temperature wear performance of wire arc additive manufactured (WAAM) SS304 stainless steel. WAAM wall structures were fabricated at 150, 155, 160, and 170A, and their microstructure, density, hardness, and dry-sliding wear behaviour were evaluated at room temperature (20 °C) and 600 °C following ASTM G99-05. Hardness generally increased with welding current among the WAAM specimens, from 206 HV20 at 150A to 216 HV20 at 170A. At room temperature, specific mass loss (SML) decreased with increasing current, although the improvement diminished at higher currents, with 170A showing the best wear performance among the WAAM conditions. At 600 °C, both SML and coefficient of friction (COF) were substantially lower than at room temperature. The 150A condition exhibited the lowest SML, approximately 49% lower than the wrought SS304 counterpart, whereas 155A showed the lowest COF. SML remained nearly constant from 155 to 170A despite variations in hardness, indicating that high-temperature wear is not governed by hardness alone. SEM observations revealed oxide-rich tribolayers on the high-temperature worn surfaces, while EDX confirmed oxygen, supporting an oxidation-assisted wear mechanism. Overall, welding current strongly influences room-temperature wear, whereas high-temperature wear is governed by thermal softening, oxidation, and tribolayer formation and its stability.
