HAYWARD, Wis. – Those who grow up on a family farm develop touchstones that define life. Those touchstones act as guideposts to gauge honesty, trust and cooperation. Often seemingly ordinary events on a farm become extraordinary due to the mix of work, personalities in a family and unpredictable situations. Some of those situations become part of the tapestry that a family weaves into a history that's recounted across generations. Later generations learn from the stories, and ancestors live on in a tightly woven fabric of family farming.

The noticeable switch from hot and humid weather to cool and drier weather, and back again, brought hope of rain as July melted into August in far-northern Wisconsin.

But others feel they're a part of the land that they have been entrusted with during their time on earth. For them, part of their spiritual practice is to nurture the land to leave it better than they found it for when they pass it on to generations to come is. They touch the hand of God by stewarding their bit of creation each day as they farm. They don't worry about accumulating worldly wealth. And the wealth they are accumulating isn't evident to the worldly.
