It’s not a new season without being called crazy. However, after this year’s submissions, I’m starting to believe I might be clinically insane. Here’s why. Since we began making our unlikely predictions, sadly I've jinxed one original Golden Knight year after year. I’m bound to curse one player on this list; let’s hope it’s not him again.
Over his career, Tomas Hertl has averaged 26 goals per season. As a Golden Knight, he's averaging 29.5 tallies per season, more than Mitch Marner and Mark Stone, and just a touch below Jack Eichel. Last year, the 2024 deadline acquisition performed under expectations.
On Tuesday night, the Golden Knights recorded 37 shots on goal in their 5-2 opening night victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. It was the most SOG for Vegas in a season debut since 2022, and the 2nd most in an opener ever. Shockingly, Vegas landed 51 shots on opening night in the 2022-23 campaign. Mr. Jack “please shoot more” Eichel registered an astounding seven shots on goal that evening. This season, Eichel has started off with two shots and a 50% shooting percentage.
It's always fun to go back at the end of the season and look at who was right and who was terribly wrong. On the latest SinBin.vegas podcast , we made our picks and, surprisingly, both chose the Carolina Hurricanes to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Also, we both have the Golden Knights in the postseason fairly easily. Regardless of their seeding in the 2027 playoffs, our expectations are extremely high for the Golden Knights. There's no reason why Vegas can't be back-to-back Western Conference champions.
On Tuesday night in Seattle, Vegas center Tomas Hertl had a throwback type of game. Hertl tied the game with a power play goal in the opening period, recorded a primary and a secondary assist, and scored a second time on the PP in the 3rd. Four-point nights are rare, even for Jack Eichel, who shared the same accomplishment on Tuesday (Eichel has done it 8 times in 319 games in Vegas).
To start the 2026-27 NHL season, several defensemen came out of the gates scorching hot. Edmonton's Evan Bouchard is among the league leaders with six goals. Colorado's Cale Makar and Minnesota's Quinn Hughes are on pace for 110+ points. Locally, VGK’s top blueliner Shea Theodore is on pace to end the season with several career highs. If things keep going the way they have, he might even finish with 200+ shots on net and 50+ points. Along with his strong defensive coverage, Theodore has been a constant concern for all seven opponents.

Since 2022-23, the Golden Knights have recorded at least 11 points in their opening eight games of every season. The trend began with former VGK coach Bruce Cassidy and continues under new leader Ryan Craig. For the fifth straight season, Vegas is in first or second place in the Pacific Division through eight games. The early autumn trend carries on, but this year the team is succeeding with its new coach.
The Golden Knights are one of four NHL teams to play nine games this season. So, some could say it's unfair to note that Vegas leads the entire league with 279 shots taken. Nevertheless, VGK is averaging 31 SOG per game, led by top centerman Jack Eichel. Currently, Eichel is sitting 6th in the NHL with 28 shots on net. Last season, Vegas ended the season with the 8th most shots with 2,337; this year, they are on pace for 300+ more shots.
The 2026-27 NHL season is only a few weeks old, but the Pacific Division is already back to its losing ways. While the division is guaranteed three playoff spots, only the Golden Knights and Oilers would qualify under a one-through-eight conference format.
There was some noise this summer that the Golden Knights may have had interest in former Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. No one from the organization hinted, leaned, or even suggested the desire to upgrade their goaltending position. However, when a Hart, Vezina and U.S. Gold Medalist becomes available, every Stanley Cup contender should check in. Carter Hart and Adin Hill can officially put any lingering anxiety or stress behind them, if they had any to begin with.
