Outgoing District 8 public safety liaison Dave Burke, right, received a mock commendation from the Castro Merchants Association at its meeting October 1. Terry Asten Bennett, left, the Cliff’s Variety co-owner who is a past president of the merchants, joked that the merchants declared October 1 “Dave Burke Day” in the Castro, “with no authority whatsoever.” Burke, a resident of Duboce Triangle and straight ally, thanked the merchants and assured them he’d still be around the neighborhood. After six years, he is transitioning to a citywide role with the San Francisco Police Department later this year, as the Bay Area Reporter recently reported, and District 8 will no longer have a dedicated liaison. Burke was recently recognized by gay Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, who represents District 8, during a board commendation session last month.
