Netflix isn't exactly known for producing long-running shows. We still think about all the great shows Netflix canceled too soon, many of which are still worth watching. But it's not all gloom and doom over at the streamer. Sometimes, Netflix finds it in its heart to throw its weight (and money) behind a show, giving fans the chance to follow a story across multiple seasons.

"Grey's Anatomy" is one of the most popular medical dramas of all time, garnering numerous accolades and inspiring devoted fans to tune in week after week, year after year. Though TV mogul Shonda Rhimes was far from the first to prove that a soapy medical show could be a long-term hit (in fact, a few shows on this list precede "Grey's"), her formula for high-stakes drama and dishy workplace relationships has proved uniquely successful.

Though most people still think of Amazon Prime as an online retailer, streaming service Prime Video has quietly built up a library of excellent television. Any network or streamer worth its salt is basically required to dive into crime drama from time to time, as this genre has been the medium's bread and butter for almost as long as TV has been around. In fact, we can trace the modern crime show back to at least "Dragnet," which began as a radio show and evolved into an NBC TV series by 1951.

Some of the most interesting characters in "Harry Potter" are the professors. Here's which Hogwarts professor you are based on your zodiac sign...

Books are a reliable source of material for television shows, and IP acquisition is a huge part of Hollywood today. As a longtime bookseller, Amazon knows this better than most, and Prime Video has churned out a number of excellent small-screen adaptations of novels over the last decade.

Outsized emotions, awkward interactions with your peers, the struggle of trying to figure out who you are — these are some of the experiences that characterize life as a teenager. The highs and lows of being a young adult make for great television, which is probably why the genre is so popular among viewers of all ages. Netflix has consistently been leading the pack when it comes to YA drama, producing popular teen originals and offering older classics for new generations to enjoy.

Though Netflix sometimes has a reputation for prioritizing quantity over quality, the streamer offers plenty of choice programming for your next binge-watch. One area where they've found success is book-to-screen adaptations, and novels have provided material for many of their best shows. Books don't always translate well to the small screen, but these series honor the source material while expanding on it.

HBO Max and Disney+ aren't the only streamers sitting on a goldmine when it comes to comic book adaptations. Netflix is also home to a number of excellent shows that draw inspiration from your favorite colorful, dynamic panels.

Apple TV has consistently proven itself as one of the best streaming platforms for television, producing endlessly watchable, sometimes mind-bending shows for everyone to enjoy. From feel-good series like "Ted Lasso" to thrilling head-scratchers like "Severance" and "Silo," the platform has become a go-to destination for prestige TV.
