The 24-state August total came in at 19.17 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from a year ago. The gains will likely be enhanced when adjusted for rising component levels.

Retaliatory tariffs continue to put US dairy at a disadvantage in China while our competitors gain ground.
The September federal order Class III milk price was announced by the USDA at $16.04 per hundredweight, down 60 cents from August and $1.55 below September 2025. The nine-month average stands at $15.96, down from $18.46 at this time a year ago, and compares to $18.37 in 2024. Last Thursday's Class III futures settlements portended an October price at $15.13; November, $15.96; December, $16.30; January, $16.50; February, $16.85; and March at $17.06.

As reported last week the Agriculture Department lowered its 2026 and 2027 milk production forecasts in the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. 2026 production was projected at 236.9 billion pounds, down 300 million pounds from last month's report. If realized, output would be up 5.2 billion pounds or 2.2% from 2025. 2027 production was projected to hit 238.4 billion pounds, down 200 million pounds from a month ago. If realized, it would be up 1.5 billion pounds, or.6%, from 2026.
