Wouldn't it be nice if your memories had an index? I think this often as I search for something in my phone or my laptop. When did I send that email? Oh yes, Aug. 10. It comes right up when I search. When did I graduate from high school? I know the year -- 1991 -- but the rest is sort of fuzzy. Wait, a teacher had given a few...

A molten glass leak last week at Ardagh Glass in Port Allegany resulted in a three-alarm response from more than 75 volunteer firemen, but no injuries were reported. Just before 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 21, Star Hose Co. and mutual aid units were dispatched to the plant for a molten glass leak. Reports indicated the employees had not been able to stop the spread of the molten glass. Ardagh has...

Two cases of measles have been found in McKean County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. A state map dated Sept. 2 showed four cases each in neighboring Warren, Elk and Potter counties. Cameron County had no confirmed cases. Across the New York border, Cattaraugus County confirmed its first measles case in more than 35 years Wednesday. The county had not recorded a case since 1990, according to Cattaraugus...

Twenty-five years. A quarter of a century. And yet millions of Americans can still remember where they were on Sept. 11, 2001, when many dropped what they were doing and tuned in, just in time to see the second plane strike the Twin Towers. There were 2,977 victims at the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and at the plane crash in Shanksville involving United Airlines Flight 93....

SMETHPORT — McKean County’s top prosecutor is asking the state Superior Court to review whether the appointed judge in the Tyler Prescott case should be recused, citing sealed defense filings and ex parte hearings from which prosecutors were excluded. Prescott is accused of sexually assaulting and killing his 2-year-old son, Oakley Hedlund. The death penalty is being pursued against Prescott. During the course of the case, which has yet to...

No matter how much we begged, the folks at the National Weather Service had the same four-letter word for the end of the week — snow. "Just a trace," said meteorologist Nicholas Beaty with a laugh. "Maybe just some on the grass." Explaining the forecast, he said, "It looks like we have a little bit of rain-snow mix in the forecast Friday night into Saturday morning. "A low temperature of...

A helping hand might make a big difference to someone in need. That's the case in Marshburg, with neighbors Dan Brinsky and John Healy. The Healys had relocated here, first from New York City and then from the Poconos, without friends or family. When John Healy suffered an injury that required care in a rehabilitation hospital, his wife, Susan, was alone. In the winter. Trying to deal with heavy snow...

Do you ever find yourself screaming at inanimate objects? Sports fans, I know that's a yes. I always have giggled a bit when people "help out" the movie they are watching — "why are you going upstairs to try to get away from a killer?" — or a contestant on a television show — "the price on the sofa is higher than the television!" I became one of those fruitless...

With dogged determination and a love of local history, Bradford's Bob Baker has unearthed what he calls "the holy grail" of Case knife collecting. It's a cabinet from Little Valley, N.Y., the original home of Case Bros. knives, marked with their company's early logo. And as with most things involving Baker, there's a heck of a story around it. "This is a rare, one-of-a-kind Case Bros. Cutlery cabinet that dates...
