A large female monarch butterfly drinks nectar from late purple aster flowers. This female was part of the “super generation” which migrates south to Mexico in the fall. They are larger and live much longer than generations produced during the summer. Summer individuals only live long enough to mate and lay eggs – maybe a month – whereas super generation individuals can live about nine months to complete both the fall and spring migrations, then lay eggs before dying.
