The Joshua Basin Water District met on Wednesday (August 19) to discuss — amongst other things — board changes brought on by actions from their last meeting on August 5. At that meeting, agenda items calling for the formal censure of board President Stacy Doolittle and a reorganization of the board were proposed but ultimately withdrawn by board Vice President Thomas Short.

The Morongo Unified School District Board (MUSD) of Trustees met on Tuesday (8/25) in a study session to decide the next steps on what to do about declining enrollment in the school district. This is the first meeting on that subject since a dedicated Enrollment Committee of parents, students, teacher and staff presented their recommendations to the school district board last June, saying that school closures should be considered a “last resort” in the search for cost savings and budget reconciliation.

A state bill and two assembly bills are looking to ease the financial burden on property owners looking to build on land with Western Joshua Trees on it. The Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act is a piece of legislation enacted in 2023 that prohibits the “take” of a Joshua Tree without paying a permit fee. A “take” the legal term used by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to describe the removal, destruction, transplant, or harvest of a threatened species such as the Western Joshua Tree. Along with the WJTCA, the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan is the non-legislative portion that provides guidance on conserving the species. Changes to the WJTCP could be done without lawmakers, but since the Act is a piece of legislation any changes must be done through the state assembly process.
