Boxing needed a good night on Saturday. The sport had been in a bit of the doldrums as of late. Actually more than a bit of them. Devin Haney wasn’t scheduled to fight anyone, neither was Shakur Stevenson. Canelo Alvarez was at the tail end of his career and Tyson Fury was indicating that he wasn’t going to fight Anthony Joshua after all. Again this sort of news was far from thrilling for anyone. Boxing is meant to be exciting both in and out of the ring. Too little was happening out of the ring and often inside the rain as well.
First things first – boxing is not dead. I’ve literally been told by people for decades the sport is no longer alive only for those same doomsayers to open up their wallets for the next superfight, be it a legitimate throwdown or a ridiculous novelty act. With that being said the sweet science is currently in a grand state of inertia here in 2026. Don’t believe it? Ask yourself what signed fight you’re authentically excited for. Not a hoped-for bout, but an upcoming event that’s been guaranteed by law via a signed and legitimate contract? If your response is none or perhaps one at the most, you’re not alone. A simple scan through social media will let you know all you need to about the current state of boxing fandom. And yeah, fans shouldn’t be happy.

Someone obviously forgot to give Filip Hrgovic the memo that Saturday night in London was supposed to all be about Moses Itauma, a man who several hours earlier had pushed him off a stage. Most felt that Itauma was going to win the vacant IBF heavyweight title over Hrgovic at the O2 Arena. There was of course good reason to feel that Itauma would win. He appeared the far faster puncher. He also was a knockout artist. Lastly he was many years younger than the 34-year old Hrgovic. None of it mattered in the end though when Itauma’s corner threw in the towel.
One has been the picture of driving discipline. The other? Perhaps not so much. Still both Katie Taylor and Andy Ruiz are going to be the highlights of boxing for this first week of September 2026. Ireland’s Taylor is having her last battle at home before retiring from the ring where she found glory. Ruiz on the other hand is hoping to come back after a checkered few years. Indeed, Ruiz hasn’t look spectacular since that night in 2019 when he stunned the world by defeating Anthony Joshua then a world champion in Joshua’s American debut. How long it’s been.

I was fortunate not to have fallen asleep behind the wheel on my way home that October evening close to eight years ago. Cheshire was a long way from Boston and it was way past midnight. Boston traffic may not be as bad as the traffic in New York or L.A. but the roads are so oddly arranged that it can be a frustrating experience even on the best of days just to get out of town. Again, I was fortunate not to have fallen asleep on my way back home well over a hundred miles away. It had been worth it, though. Even on that long dark ride I knew it had been worth it. Tough, but worth it.
Ryan Garcia simply isn’t going to act in a professional manner. At least not much of the time. One just has to wonder if he does it for the money and eyeballs or if it’s just who he is. Connor Benn, Garcia’s opponent this weekend and Vegas, was left hanging when Garcia decided not to show up for a pre-fight face off. Around the same the 28-year-old titlist was busying himself it seems talking smack about file for pound legend Terrence Crawford. It was all part for the course. In the end of Ryan Garcia is gonna Ryan Garcia.
Admittedly it’s not the biggest fight that’s ever gone down on Mexican Independence Day weekend. Floyd Mayweather once owned this time frame. And after Floyd there was Canelo. And now it seems there’s Ryan Garcia. Not that Garcia isn’t a talented and exciting fighter. He most certainly is or at least he can be. If you would argue however that he’s dominated the sport in the way that Mayweather and Canelo have you’d be lying.. Then again Garcia remains just under 30 so there’s plenty of time for him to grow if of course he can or chooses to do so.
