MORGANTOWN — Heading into the locker room at half, West Virginia football looked like it was cruising to a season-opening win.

MORGANTOWN -- There were a lot of position battles this offseason. Everyone wanted to know who the starting quarterback was, who would start across the offensive line, and if true freshman Matt Sieg would start in the secondary.

MORGANTOWN -- One of the reasons fans and experts had high expectations and excitement around West Virginia football was the offseason moves made when the roster was rebuilt.

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia football received a commitment from former Carolina Panthers rookie minicamp participant and Georgia safety JaCorey Thomas, according to multiple outlets. With the new NCAA ruling of 5-for-5, multiple 2022 prospects, like Thomas, weren't grandfathered in, causing them to sue the NCAA to gain extra eligibility. Last month, Thomas was granted a temporary restraining order in Texas to return to college for his fifth year.

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia football's offense in the first half against Coastal Carolina couldn't have gone any better. The Mountaineers had 24 points, 336 total yards of offense and averaged 7.5 yards per play. The ground attack, which is supposed to be the strength, had 223 yards on offense. Everything was going according to plan.

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia football can break a long eight-year streak on Saturday against the FCS's U.T. Martin. No, it's not going to the College Football Playoffs or setting a statistical record. It's simply starting a season 2-0.
