A substantial brick chimney rises through the center of Carl Maston's Ventura beach house, giving the oceanfront home a surprisingly grounded heart. Completed in 1984, the Susman House sits above a sandy cove at Faria Beach, with views toward the Channel Islands. Its original brief was appealingly specific: preserve the spirit of a traditional California cabin within a contemporary home.

A headphone jack shouldn't be a headline. Neither should a slot for adding storage, a battery you can change, or a keyboard with actual keys. Yet those are exactly the details that make certain gadgets interesting again. A strange little object on the dinner table, a lamp that reveals something unexpected, or a pair of shoes with eyes on the heels can be enough. The most interesting seasonal designs give familiar things a new personality, leaving room for a little mischief without turning the entire house into a haunted attraction overnight.

Tall, divided windows wrap around Leah's living room, giving this small home the appearance of a glazed garden pavilion. Offered by Swedish builder Vagabond Haven, the modular design combines an open living area with a separate downstairs bedroom and a sleeping loft.
