Bethany Beach Mayor Ron Calef began the Aug. 21 town council meeting by thanking Town employees — including trolley drivers, beach ambassadors, parking enforcement, seasonal police, lifeguards, police, Public Works and the horticultural crews — for “keeping the town running like a well-oiled machine, as they always do” during the summer.

During his years in office, one of the nicest compliments state Rep. Ron Gray has received is being characterized as “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” a reference to the 1939 Jimmy Stewart movie about a modest citizen appointed to the U.S. Senate who exposes corruption.

Bethany Beach police are using drones to help with enforcement, including enforcement of the overnight beach curfew, but they have had angry protesters throw items at the drones and also damage Flock cameras, which the Town has used for the past year.

After learning this week that no new, separate pathway will be built from Fred Hudson Road to Route 1 in Bethany Beach as DelDOT makes structural repairs to the bridge there, state Rep. Ron Gray said he's hopeful a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle path will be established “in the future over the wetlands adjacent to Fred Hudson Road.”

Late Sunday morning, not long before Bethany Beach's Independence Day Parade began, Santa Claus, dressed in red shorts and a print shirt, knelt to chat with 5-year-old Niall Roberts of Frankford, who offered an enthusiastic high-five.

The Ocean View Planning & Zoning Commission, at its Thursday, Sept. 17, meeting, is expected to review the preliminary plan for a proposed new Dunkin' with drive-through at 95-101 Atlantic Avenue (Route 26).
