I love visiting farm stands at this time of year. On each visit, I seem to find new produce coming into season.

In some ways, the chicken recipe below is perfect for summer. It's perfect because it's messy to eat. I always think of summer meals as a bit sloppy — think of watermelon, that perfect food in these warm months. Or coleslaw. Or ice cream!

I enjoy taco salads in restaurants. There's something entertaining about a salad of meat, vegetables and condiments that uses a fried-tortilla shell as a bowl. Still, this concoction is definitely over the top. I have never had the fortitude — or appetite — to finish an oversized taco shell.

One of my favorite food seasons of the year has arrived: blueberry season. To me, the best blueberries — around for only a short time — are the low-bush berries often called “wild.” Nationally, these tiny blue pearls are associated with Maine. Locally, they are associated with Heath. There, the high elevation perfectly suits these small fruits from small plants.

I can't get enough corn at this time of year. I never buy fresh corn in the winter and spring. I see ears in grocery stores then, but I know there is no chance those ears have been picked that day. I want truly fresh corn — and in August, it's available at just about any farm stand.

A couple of weeks ago, people from my hamlet — and beyond — celebrated Hawley Day. The second Sunday in August is the annual reunion of the Sons & Daughters of Hawley, the town's historical society. It also gives Hawleyites and friends a chance to meet, catch up on news, and, of course, eat. Eating is, after all, what people in small towns — and around the world — do best when they get together.

I recently attended the annual Peach Fest at Apex Orchards in Shelburne. For two perfect sunny days the orchard welcomed members of the public to shop at vendor booths, listen to music, eat lunch, and of course pick and purchase peaches.
