O RLEANS — Vermont parades almost invariably save fire engines, with their lights flashing and sirens blaring, for the final act, finishing up the lineup. Not so on Saturday, when a parade wound its way through Orleans. It had shiny red engines in front, in the middle and at the end of the procession.
L OWELL — At 15 years old, lifelong NEK resident Jake Swanson already knew what he wanted to do for a living. Naturally, it involved a chainsaw. N EWPORT — If the charges filed against Lisa Gaylor, 40, of Barton stand up in court, her story may be one of a fox guarding the henhouse, according to the affidavit filed by Vermont State Police Detective Sergeant Joshua Mikkola. Sergeant Mikkola's affidavit says Thomas Howell, himself a former State Police Trooper and currently head of administration at Jay Peak Resort, called police on April 21 and said Ms. Gaylor, who worked as vault supervisor, had embezzled about $70,000 since the fall of 2025.
Ruby Lenora (Kaulback) Greenwood, 103, died peacefully at her home on August 28, 2026. Born on December 27, 1922, in Parkdale, Nova Scotia, Canada, Ruby was the daughter of Laurin Enos Kaulback and Oressa Viola (Rhodenizer) Kaulback. She grew up in a large and loving family and outlived all of her siblings: sisters Geneva, Madeline, Phyllis, Gladys, and Ruth, and her brother Laurin “Ted” Kaulback.
enneth Victor Royer, known to many as “Chubby,” died at the age of 75, on August 24, 2026, after years of illness. He was born on November 30, 1950, in Barton, to Berton Royer and Norine Bishop.
NEWPORT — After a productive three-and-a-half-hour long hearing on September 3, the amended city charter had only a few sections that need to be finalized. Of course, those few included some of the thorniest issues, but Mayor Rick Ufford-Chase asked the task force that produced the current draft, to meet before the next hearing, slated for September 14, to come up with language on at least one of them.

N EWPORT — Parents of students at North Country Union High School were startled Friday to receive a message through the Parent Square system informing them that Principal Chris Young had tendered his resignation, effective immediately. The announcement, which did not include any explanation of his decision, came only a little over a week after the school year began.
