When watching a movie like “Supergirl,” the latest installment from the DC Comics universe, it won’t take the average viewer long to start asking questions.

On a rainy Monday, Aug. 3, I found myself bright and early at the Hanover Co-op in Hanover, New Hampshire. It was 7:30 a.m., one half hour before the busy market was due to open. The film crew behind the feature-length “Valley Transit,” currently filming on location throughout the Upper Valley region, had already been there since at least 6 a.m., working to prep the set for the morning’s shoot.

If writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s new film, “The End of Oak Street,” feels as if it came from a movie season straight out of the early ‘80s, that’s all by design.

“Tony,” the new film from Matt Johnson (“Blackberry,” “Nirvanna the Band, the show, the Movie”) marks an interesting departure from the filmmaker’s previous work, showcasing a director who can put together a solid biopic without relying on the absurdities we come to expect.
