After leasing the former ice cream shop last fall, Max Sayer and Jacky Welch set out renovate the space to pay tribute to pizzerias of the 1980s with wood-paneled walls and vintage Schlitz Beer chandeliers hanging over booths.

RICHMOND, Va. — A year-old pizza pop-up has completed its transformation into a brick-and-mortar spot in Scott’s Addition.

The 106-year-old building has had a number of uses over the years, including as a manufacturing plant, a restaurant – The Spaghetti Warehouse occupied the space in the 1990s – and office space.

The new concept would bring back many of Hadad’s Lake’s former mainstays, like pools, sand volleyball courts, a fishing pier, banquet hall and outdoor patio, as well as new features such as pickleball courts, a basketball court and a restaurant.

“In order to serve the breweries, we needed to come up with a program where we have good, quality ingredients that can help them make the best beer. That was our focus, but we didn't want to do it halfway,” said CEO Dave Robertston.

The deal is the latest sign of SNP Properties' bullishness on the Shockoe area in recent years. Since 2021, the firm has spent $31.3 million to buy four properties in the neighborhood.
