Summer might be over but we can console ourselves with the arrival of new season carrots.
These vibrant vegetables grow well in sandy soil and the land around Magilligan, reclaimed from the sea, has the perfect conditions.
The temperatures are still very pleasant but the leaves on trees are changing colour, the evenings are on the turn and there's an autumnal feel in the air.

Gammon and an apple dessert is a winning combination
It's a Discovery variety – an exterior like the apple that appeared in Snow White and a pink, mottled flesh when you cut into it.
Over the years however I have embraced meat free days and even did Veganuary last year (won't be repeating it…). With the price of meat increasing daily it makes sense to embrace vegetables.
As a child of the seventies I should be used to it – being cold was just part of growing up. What I do remember is lots of soups and stews to warm the body and the soul.
Next week has two of my favourite culinary celebrations in it – Apple Day and Gin and Tonic day. Apple Day was started in started in 1990 on 21st October and has developed into a day across the UK to celebrate this prolific fruit.
When I look back the mince always sizzled in the pan and smelled so beefy and delicious. Over the years some mince hasn't been great, especially supermarket varieties.
A turnip would have been carved for a lantern, you'd have dressed up in a home-made outfit and dunked for apples from a basin.
